Standard

Scope of Application

The UL 181 standard ensures the safety and energy efficiency of air duct systems through strict fire resistance, sealing, and durability tests. It is a core basis for building ventilation design and acceptance, and a prerequisite for market access.

Core Technical Requirements

Raw Material Compliance Certificate: ……ASTM A653……

Fire Performance Testing

Flame Test: Simulate fire source contact with air duct materials to evaluate their flame retardancy (flame spread index ≤25, smoke index ≤50). Refer to ASTM E84 standard.

Requirements for the combustion class (e.g., V-0 class) of plastic components (such as air duct connectors) to ensure self-extinguishing properties of materials. Refer to UL 94 standard.

Air ducts in high-rise buildings need to additionally comply with NFPA 262-2023.

Air Leakage Test

Standardized test method for air duct system leakage rate: ASHRAE 120-2023.

Pressure Resistance and Mechanical Strength - Internally defined experimental procedure by UL 181.

Material Durability Testing

Salt Spray Test: Metal air ducts exposed for 96 hours without rust penetration. Refer to ASTM B117 standard.

Damp Heat Cycle Test: 500 hours at 70℃/95%RH, no delamination or deformation of materials.

Material safety meets NFPA 90A/90B.

Remarks

Samples are sent to UL laboratories for the above tests.

Production factories need to pass UL audits (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 14001).

After certification, UL labels are obtained (marked as "UL 181A Listed" or "UL 181B Classified").
